Welcome to this Grand Seiko SBGX047 fanpage. It is dedicated to this beautiful Japan Domestic Market (JDM) model. It is a quarz model with a textured silver dial, with glacier blue tones, and a fine, delicate steel bracelet.

Information on this model is hard to find. I try to collect all available information and publish it here. The SBGX047 is manufactured from 2005 to 2007. The model features in the Seiko catalogues of those years (see the catalogues page).

(Did you see it? Check around 0:07 😉)

The SBGX047 is based on the conventional Seiko style and the advise of the product designer Mr. Naoto Fukasawa. It follows the practicality-based quality of factual robustness and delicate creation by a high level craftsmanship.

The case is a very complex model made up of 27 planes in total, secondary and tertiary curved surfaces, and every surface is finished with a mirror surface. Especially, the total number of “Zaratsu (or “blade polishing”) polished” surfaces such as slopes and crown guard tips flowing from the tip of the can tip to the upper side is as many as 17. So it cannot be beautifully finished without using very skilled craftsmen.

When buying a SBGX047 (or any other older watch for that matter) take a good look at how the watch is polished. I didn’t do that and bought a watch which has been polished a second time. It is still a fine piece, but it is failing the sharp edges and slopes. Here is a photo of a watch in (what I believe) original state.

The “spindle shape” indices and hands were adopted to produce urban individuality as well as basic readability. Markers and hands are made of two (left and right) slopes and the middle plane. And the silhouette is a gentle curve. In order to finish it into a uniform shape which beautifully reflects light, cutting technique of advanced craftsmen based on rich experience is necessary.

The light-steel blue dial is adopted for three models (SBGR 029, SBGX 047, STGF 047) representing a new line. On the surface of this dial is a grindstone finish in the longitudinal direction, expressing a refreshing distinctive color tone like carbonated mineral water with subtly blue mixed with silver as its keynote. While it is an urban coolness and color with smartness, it is finished in a dial with depth and luxury.

Just to compare the dial with a Polar white one…
